1st Team Match Report v Derbyshire 4.8.13
On Sunday 4th August 2013 we faced Derbyshire at Chesterfield Golf Club.
Once again, we struggled in the foursomes with the pairing of Nugent and James being the only ones to win. Garey and Norman, after being in front, eventually ended up halving their game.
However, the team were keen to battle hard in the singles to secure a win and what a fantastic start we had. Halved points from James and Nugent followed by wins from Carpenter, Sadler and Lane gave us a fighting chance.
We only required 2 ½ points from the remaining 5 matches and a win was ours. Unfortunately, all of our remaining players were down and I knew it was going to be a struggle. Adam Norman fought back and gained his point but Garey, Wallace and Austin all eventually lost. All we could hope for now was a draw.
Matt Vigurs was our only player left on the course and he was all square on the 18th tee (par 5). After two shots both players were greenside for two. Matt, well aware of the situation, played a magnificent pitch to about 8 feet. With the pressure on, the Derbyshire player thinned his bunker shot and followed up by fluffing his chip – Matt had won and we’d halved the match.
With one match remaining the league title is still in our hands provided we beat Staffordshire by 3 ½ points or more we will win. However, we must improve our performance in the foursomes to have any chance of doing that!!
Unfortunately, we will be without Henry James for our final match. Henry will be starting his golf scholarship in America. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Henry for supporting the 1st team this season and wish him all the best at college in the states.
Throughout the season all the 1st team players have got on really well and have good team spirit so come on lads I know we can do it!!!
