1st Team match report v S&H at Bridgnorth Golf Club on Sunday 8th June 2014
Result: Worcestershire 8 1/2 v 6 1/2 Shropshire and Herefordshire
The victorious 1st Team at Bridgnorth on Sunday 8th June 2014
LtoR : Bill Thompson ( WUGC President) Matt Vigurs, Josh Carpenter, Ben Robinson, Ollie Gough, Steven Lane, Richard Sadler, Oliver Farrell, Henry James, Josh McMahon and Tony Hill ( County Captain)
The first team gathered the day before to give the players a good opportunity to have a practice round on this highly regarded, very well presented, golf course. As it turned out, this approach really helped us to win vital matches in both the foursomes and singles.
A few days before, Adam Norman had to withdraw due to a persistent back injury so I had to step in, to what I considered to be, a very strong team. It was a special day for Richard Sadler, who was making his 100th appearance for the 1st Team, a tremendous achievement, and one which very few ever make but I know Steven Lane is also well on the way.
It was great to see Ben Robinson returning to the team whist on his summer break from Louisiana University as well as a welcome return from Oliver Farrell, who recently played for England in the Fairhaven Trophy/ Nations Cup.
After recent storms, the weather was perfect and our foursomes pairings made solid starts with some convincing wins, especially from our centurion, Sadler, who made seven birdies with Ollie Gough in a 5&4 victory. Other excellent wins from Henry James & Ben Robinson as well as Josh Carpenter&Matt Vigurs gave us the edge at lunch being 3 -2 ahead.
We started the singles matches in a confident mood but this started to change as Robinson and James both lost whilst all the other matches were either all square or down. Sadler was involved in a typical scrap against his old adversary, Andy Stevenson. Two down with two to play, Richard birdied the 17th and hit his second to 8 ft on the last only to miss the putt. Fortunately, Andy missed a short putt for par and the match was halved. Other matches were hard fought but very important halves from Farrell and McMahon meant that just a few wins would secure us the all important victory. Thankfully, Josh Carpenter and Matt Vigurs were both on top form and won their singles with superb 5&3 wins. Solid as a rock, Steven Lane, wore down his opponent, their Captain, (who had never beaten Steven in 10 years) to win 2&1 whilst I managed a 2&1 win to ensure that the overall victory was ours.

This away win puts us in a strong league position before our next match against Derbyshire on Sunday 6th July at Stourbridge. I'm hoping that everyone can make themselves available for that crucial fixture, especially Richard Sadler, who, I hope, can continue his remarkable run of County appearances at this level.
Josh McMcMahon and Oliver Farrell earn crucial halves in their singles matches at Bridgnorth
I'd like to thank all the staff at Bridgnorth Golf Club for their warm hospitality and especially to the greens staff for preparing he course to such a high standard for the match. The course was in marvellous condition. I'd also like to thank the S&H officials, particularly, Mike Roberts (President), Roger Alsten (Past President) and John McQuillan ( match manager) for looking after us extremely well throughout the day. I'd also like to thank Bill Thompson ( WUGC President) for his support in preparing for this match and on the day itself.
