1st Team v Derbyshire @ Stourbridge GC on Sunday 8th May 2016 - REPORT
The first league match of the season, versus Derbyshire, took place at Stourbridge GC (4th hole pictured on 8.5.16) on Sunday 8th May 2016. The course was in good condition given the poor weather throughout the spring, and the sun shone all day long perfect golfing conditions! The club always offers great support for County fixtures and this occasion was no exception. As usual, their hospitality was excellent.
The morning foursomes matches were led away by the Captain, Richard Sadler (pictured, holding flag during his singles match) and his partner Chris Heeley. After the usual ebb and flow of foursomes, the morning finished with Worcestershire 2 v 3 behind, and needing a strong start in the afternoon.
Worcestershire claimed the first two afternoon singles, but went down on the next 4. This meant that a victory could only be claimed if all four of the last players won their matches. A tremendous late afternoon surge saw us take 3 1/2 points from the last 4, which meant that the overall match was halved 7 1/2 v 7 1/2.
This result means that, as last year, the league title is likely to be very closely fought with every match point ad every individual game point crucial.
The next match is away against Staffordshire at Oxley Park GC on Sunday 5th June.
