Sherwood Forest GC hosted Worcestershire’s 1st match of the season against a strong Nottinghamshire side. The weather was set fair and the course was immaculate as ever!
James Robinson and Kieron Austin led the team out in match 1 of the foursomes and got us off to a winning start with a 4&2 victory. Matches 2 and 3 went Nottinghamshire's way, with Luke Rogers and Ben Woodward losing 1 down and Steve Lane and Tom Howells going down 6&5.
Richard Sadler and Mark Dixon levelled the game up in match 4 with Richard holing ‘one of those’ at the last to win 1up. Adam Norman and Matt Brookbanks were never down in match 5 but unfortunately the match ended in a half, leaving the morning foursomes 2 1/2 each and all to play for in the afternoon singles.
Robinson led the way again for Worcestershire and gained a well earned half point against undoubtedly Nottinghamshire’s number 1 off a mere +4. Lane went down 4&2 in match 2 but matches 3 and 4 went Worcestershire’s way, with superb victories coming from Austin and Rogers 1up and 3&2 respectively. A good start for Worcestershire in the afternoon singles but Nottinghamshire fought back with wins in matches 5,6 and 7 against Woodward, Howells and Dixon; Woodward and Dixon losing by the narrowest of margins 1 down and Howells losing on the 17th. A strong Moseley contingent were bringing up the rear; stalwart Sadler gained a 4&3 victory in match 8 and Norman won match 10 4&2, leaving Brookbanks the only match left on the course, all square playing the 18th with the match tied 7-7. Both players were on in regulation and both players held their nerve holing 4 footers for par and match 9 ending in a half.
Thus, the match ended Nottinghamshire 7 1/2 v Worcestershire 7 1/2. A fantastic result for Worcestershire as Nottinghamshire are such a strong county, and around one of the toughest courses in their county.
