1st Team v Nottinghamshire at Rushclffe GC - Sunday 6th September 2015 REPORT
With a number of 1st team regulars back in the US, Team Captain Richard Sadler had to call on some new names to play for the County First Team, in this crucial league decider against Nottinghamshire at Rushcliffe GC. Fortunately, the new names had plenty of previous County experience, and were too prove vital to the team.
The morning foursomes went in favour of Worcestershire, with 3 1/2 points out of 5, to give us at 2 point lead at lunch. The players knew that a victory would ensure the league title, whilst anything less would leave the overall result out of our hands.
Throughout the afternoon, it looked like we would not amass the 4 1/2 points for outright victory, and things became very tense. In the end, good wins for Chris Nugent and Josh McMahon at the top of the order, were built on by a win for Kieron Austin, and halves from Anthony Hill and Chris Heeley. The overall match was halved 7 1/2 v 7 1/2, and thus the final standings would depend on the results of the other two matches being played. News filtered through that Warwickshire had lost, and that, whilst Derbyshire had beaten Staffs, it was not by enough games to beat the 43 1/2 game points that Worcestershire had compiled.
Thus Worcestershire were the Midland League Champions again, following on from the Pete Adams Team of 1998, and the 1971 side before that!!
Richard Sadler was keen to praise his team of players, pointing out that he had only used 14 players all season, in a settled side. The players used throughout the season were:
