1st Team v Nottinghamshire at Stanton-on-the-Wolds GC on Sunday 2nd July 2017
The 3rd league match of the season was against Nottinghamshire at Stanton on the Wolds golf club.
Worcestershire was led out in the foursomes by captain Adam Norman and James Robinson. Some excellent golf was played in the match but Nottinghamshire’s 6 birdies on the back 9 meant we lost the first match 1 down, much to our disappointment. Match 2 and 4 also went the way of Nottinghamshire as Steve Lane and Tom Godfrey were on the wrong end of many Nottinghamshire birdies losing 5&4, and with Matt Vigurs and Matt Osborn losing 3&2 in their match. A glimmer of hope came from match 3 and 5 as Richard Sadler and Chris Heeley managed to earn a hard fought half a point with Chris raking in a 20 footer at the last to win the hole followed by the solid pairing of Kieron Austin and Mark Dunkley winning their 3rd foursomes match in a row, taking it 4&2. After the foursomes it was 3.5 v 1.5 to Nottinghamshire, so plenty of work to do in the singles to get back in to the match.
When behind after the foursomes it's vital to get some early single points on the board but unfortunately they didn't arrive. Godfrey and Lane had very close matches but were on the wrong end of the golfing gods both losing 2 down. A win for Norman (4&3) in match 3 was followed by defeats for Robinson and Osborn both losing 3&2. This meant we had to win the last 5 matches left on the course to halve the match. Wins came from stalwarts Heeley (3&2) and Sadler (3&2) but unfortunately Dunkley went down 5&4. Austin and Vigurs provided 2 more points with wins 4&3 and 3&1 respectively. A fantastic effort from the boys at the bottom of the order, but unfortunately it wasn't quite good enough.
The match finished 8.5 v 6.5 to Nottinghamshire, meaning that the league may now be out of reach with Warwickshire winning their first 3 matches.
Many thanks to Stuart Pritchard and President Grenville Rose for showing their support again for the county 1st team, it's much appreciated.
Our next match is at Fulford Heath Golf Club against Shropshire and Herefordshire where the team will be looking to return to winning ways.
