1st Team v Shropshire & Herefordshire at Fulford Heath GC on Sunday 6th August 2017

Our 4th league match of the season was at Fulford Heath Golf Club against Shropshire and Herefordshire. The team were looking to get back to winning ways around a course that hopefully gave us some home advantage.

The morning got off to a very good start with Captain Adam Norman and Oliver Farrell winning 4&3 keeping their 100% record in foursomes intact. That was followed by half a point in match 2 from the Redditch duo of Matt Vigurs and James Robinson. Matches 3 and 4 went the way of Shropshire and Herefordshire with Matt Brookbanks and Matt Feavyour losing 4&3 and Anthony Hill and Mark Dunkley losing 3&2. Match 5 was very close all the way round but unfortunately Tom Godfrey and Matt Osborn lost 1 down. Another disappointing defeat in the foursomes (3.5 v 1.5) meant there was plenty of work to do to gain a victory.

County Champion Farrell, who heads back to America this month got the singles off to a perfect start with a comfortable 4&3 victory. Feavyour and Norman couldn't follow Farrell as they suffered defeats losing 4&3 and 3&2 respectively. After losing his foursomes match in the morning home boy Godfrey was in scintillating form in the afternoon knocking the stick out hole after hole and quickly dispatched his opponent 8&6 - great playing Tom. Another half a point in match 5 from Robinson meant the team needed 4 wins out of the last 5 matches to gain the win. Hill battled hard but eventually went down 2&1, ex Fulford Heath member Brookbanks was next and played some good golf down the stretch to hold off his opponent’s fight back, winning by 1 hole. Dunkley dispatched his opponent 4&2 leaving Shropshire and Herefordshire 7-6 ahead with 2 matches left out there. Osborn fought hard in the afternoon and won his game 2&1 leaving Vigurs in his customary 10 position this season to hopefully bring home the victory, which he duly did winning by 1 hole. A fantastic team effort in the singles, earning 6.5 points, meant we won the match 8-7. The team showed great spirit to overturn the mornings deficit - well done guys.

Thanks again go to Chairman Bill Thompson, President Grenville Rose and past presidents Denis Hayes and Brian Peplow for showing their continued support.

Many thanks also go to Fulford Heath Golf Club who looked after us all day with food and drink, and also to the green staff who had the course in excellent condition.

After 4 matches the team are lying 2nd in the league and provided we get a victory in our last match away at Derbyshire that is hopefully where we'll finish.
