On Sunday 2nd September Little Aston GC hosted my final match as captain against a strong Staffordshire side. I was very hopeful of finishing with 3 wins on the bounce following on from 2 fantastic results.
With some notable absentees for the final match it gave some players an opportunity to show what they can do.
The morning foursomes saw a couple of new pairings, one of them being Matt Vigurs and the returning Chris Nugent. Some good golf played in the top match and even with a Hole-in-one for Chris at the 5th they lost 3&1.
Matches 2 and 3 had the more familiar pairings of Steve Lane and Hadley Trenfield followed by Mark Dunkley and Kieron Austin. Unfortunately it didn’t quite happen for these guys this time losing out 3&2 and 2&1 respectively.
Myself and Mark Dixon had a hard fought match in match 4 and having been 3 down with 5 to play and getting all square standing on the 18th tee an errant tee shot from myself cost us a bogey and a 1 down defeat.
Another new pairing in match 5 consisted of Matt Brookbanks and new comer Bobby Campbell. This time the difference of a couple of putts either way saw us on the losing end 2&1.
Having been 5-0 up after the foursomes in the previous match unfortunately we were on the other end this time round and it wasn’t a pleasant feeling. Improvement required in the afternoon.
I decided on the County Champion Mark Dunkley to lead the way in the singles but Staffordshire’s number one was in scintillating form ending in a 6&5 defeat for Mark.
Wins in 3 of the next 4 matches from Chris Nugent 5&4, Steve Lane 2&1 (well done Steve, first one of the year!!) and Kieron Austin 5&3 got some much needed points on the board, just Matt Vigurs losing out 2&1 in match 3.
Tough times in the next 4 matches saw defeats for Hadley Trenfield 1 down, Myself 1 down, Mark Dixon 4&3 and Bobby Campbell 2&1.
Matt Brookbanks in match 10 played some good golf to beat Staffordshire’s captain 2&1.
The singles finished 6-4 meaning the end result was a win for Staffordshire 11-4. The result meant we finished 4th in the league with 2 wins and 3 defeats.
I would just like to say a big thank you to Secretary Stuart Pritchard, President Grenville Rose and Chairman Bill Thompson for their support over the past 2 years as Captain.
To the players that have played any match for me and to those that have played every match for me, I can’t thank you guys enough for making my captaincy an enjoyable and very proud experience for me.
I’d like to wish next years Captain Steve Lane all the very best and hope he receives the same support I did.
