1st Team v Staffordshire - Redditch GC 5th July 2015 REPORT

20 of the best players from Worcestershire and Staffordshire arrived at Redditch Golf Club for the 3rd match of a 5 match league season. Following a fine breakfast the morning foursomes started at 10.00am. At the turn, Worcestershire were well up in the first two matches, with the final 3 matches all being very close. By mid way through the back 9 it looked like Worcestershire could go into lunch with a 1 or 2 point lead, but golf can be a fickle game, and both of the last two matches were lost by a single hole. Thus, the lunchtime position was 2 v 3.

However, the team were not daunted, and Richard Sadler was confident that his team could turn the match around in the afternoon singles. Things were very evenly poised all afternoon, and by the time the last match reached the 9th green, a close finish was already on the cards. With the situation very tense the weather was to add to the drama, as all the players were called off the course for 45 minutes due to thunder and lightning. As the players headed back out onto the course, the Worcestershire team were to find some inspiration, winning 5 out of the first 9 games to finish, leaving the match score at 7 v 7. Chris Heeley was the final Worcestershire player out on the course, and won the 17th to go 1 up. He then calmly rolling in a tricky 4 foot down hill breaking putt on the last to halve the hole, win his match 1 up, and secure the 8 v 7 victory for Worcestershire.

This exciting victory leaves the Worcestershire 1st team with 3 wins out of 3, and in a very strong position going into the final two matches.

The match was played in an excellent spirit, and Worcestershire were delighted to welcome both Roger Waite (Staffordshire President) and his wife together with Kevin Beattie (Staffordshire County Captain) and his partner to Redditch Golf Club. They enjoyed an after match meal on a table hosted by Will Painter (Worcestershire President) and Bill Keen (Redditch GC President.)

Richard was keen to thank all the Worcestershire supporters, Denis Hayes, Jim Gray, Tony Edwards, and of course Will Painter. He also thanked Redditch GC for allowing the County to use their course, which everyone agreed was in superb condition.

The teams next match, Warwickshire away, at Edgbaston on Sunday 2nd August, could be the season decider, and Richard urges everyone to come along to support the team.
