1st Team v Warwickshire at The Worcestershire GC - Sunday 3rd July 2016 - REPORT
The Worcestershire GC hosted the annual league match between Worcestershire 1st Team and their counterparts from Warwickshire. This was the key match of the season, with a win required to keep alive hopes of winning the league, after two draws to start the season.
The morning foursomes started in bright sunshine, and with a solid win from Richard Sadler (Captain) and Chris Nugent. Unfortunately there was only one other point won in the morning, by the pair of Matt Osborn and Kieron Austin. Thus at lunch the score was 2 v 3 and the lads knew that they were going to have to battle hard in the afternoon singles against a very strong Warwickshire team.
The singles saw fine wins from Chris Nugent (2 points out of 2 for the day) and Steve Lane, giving Worcestershire 2 out of the first 3 points, effectively drawing the scores level at 4 v 4. With many of the other matches close, for most of the afternoon it looked like the match could go either way. However, despite wins from Tom Godfrey and Kieron Austin (also 2 points out of 2 for the day) the overall score just moved away from Worcestershire and the final result was 6 v 9.
The County would like to thank The Worcestershire for hosting the event, and providing a course in excellent condition. All the players found the course to be one of the best they have played this year, with the greens proving a particularly challenging test. The welcome from the club, and the food provided was also first class.
Richard would like to thank the team supporters, Norman Bolton, Brian Peplow, Will & Claire Painter and Stuart Pritchard.
The next match is against Nottinghamshire on Sunday 7th August, and is at Moseley GC.
