1st Team v Warwickshire @ Hagley G&CC - Sunday 7th September 2014
The Worcestershire County 1st Team arrived at Hagley G&CC for the final league match of the season against Warwickshire. who had already won the league. However, the team were keen to end the season on a high by inflicting a defeat on the league champions. The match was also to be the final match of the current County Captain, Anthony Hill.
The reception form Hagley G&CC was excellent with the Captain, Dave Sargeant giving a personal welcome to both teams over breakfast. The club secretary and a number of other past captains were also present, with Mark Ralphs (Past Captain) starting both morning and afternoon matches.
The morning foursomes weer all keenly contested, with WUGC wins from the teams of Matt Vigurs/Josh McMahon, Steve Lane/Anthony Hill and Phil Dyke/Roman Croft. Phil Dyke and Roman Croft had been drafted into the team at late notice and it was Roman Croft's debut 1st team appearance, so a creditable win. The lunch time score was 3v2 in Worcestershire's favour.
The afternoon singles were played in beautiful late summer sunshine and there was some top class golf. The early results went in favour of Worcestershire but Warwickshire fought back in the later matches. The singles eventually went to Warwickshire 5 1./2 v 4 1/2, meaning the overall match ended as a 7 1.2 v 7 1/2 tie.
Unfortunately Worcestershire Captain Anthony Hill was taken ill towards the end of his singles match and was not able to stay for the evening meal. However, Matt Vigurs proved an adept speaker in thanking both Hagley G&CC for hosting the match, and Warwickshire for a fine match. In his response Steve Creed Warwickshire County Captain was full of praise for Hagley and expressed the hope that he and his team would be able to come back and play the course again in the near future.
The day ended with Bill Thompson, Worcestershire County President, praising Warwickshire on winning both the league and the County 6s , and wishing them well in the County Finals at Royal North Devon. Bill was also able to confirm that Matt Vigurs had enjoyed a very successful season in the 1st team and was the clear winner of the Presidents Shield (most 1st team points) for 2014.
The County would like to thank Hagley G&CC for hosting this match for us. The hospitality throughout the day was first class and the course was in superb condition.
