1st Team win 8-7 v Warwickshire in Midland league opener - match report and pictures
Captain’s Match Report – WUGC 1st Team v Warwickshire.
On Sunday 12th May 2013 at Maxstoke Park Golf Club, the County 1st team beat Warwickshire 8 to 7 in the first league game of the season. This was an excellent win as Warwickshire are the 2012 league champions.
The foursomes, which are the key to these matches, went our way 3.5 to 1.5. The pairings of Sadler & Austin, Lane & Vigurs and Carpenter & Wallace all won convincingly to give us 3 points. A 2 hole penalty incurred by James & Garey cost us this match – Unfortunately, Garey started the match with 15 clubs in his bag. This shouldn’t happen again as we’ve all “chipped in” and bought him a calculator!!! Nugent and Norman had an excellent comeback to take their match down the 18th to give us another ½ point. After an excellent morning’s work we were all set up for the afternoon.
We needed 4.5 points from the singles to win the match. After deciding to mix up the order in the afternoon our younger players were ready to face the tough opposition that Warwickshire’s best players could provide. Matt Vigurs got us off to a great start by winning at number 1. This was followed by solid wins from Sadler, Lane and Carpenter to give us 4 points. We only needed half a point to win the match and that came from Adam Norman.
Most players would have dropped their heads after being at one point, 4 down! However, Adam battled back and eventually halved his game giving us the much needed ½ a point and victory. It’s these small margins that often decide the league titles.
Overall, this was an excellent TEAM effort and all players contributed to this superb opening win. Confidence is high and the team are all looking forward to our next match against Notts at Beeston Fields on Sunday 26th May.
