2014 U18 Boys Match Play Finals - Report and pictures

U18 Boys Match Play Finals

 Played at Stourbridge G.C.

18th & 19th August 2014

At 8.00 a.m. on Monday 18th August, 16 boys set out to win the 2014 Boys Matchplay Championship at Stourbridge Golf Club. What became immediately apparent to every competitor was the superb quality of the greens and general presentation of the course. Since his appointment just over two years ago, the new Greenkeeper, Neil Smith, has significantly improved the quality of the playing surfaces and the whole course is consistently in excellent condition, bringing much joy to the members, which is now full. In addition, the catering staff opened up early to provide breakfasts to boys and their parents as well as looking after everyone extremely well throughout the two days. The County would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Stourbridge Golf Club members and staff for their superb hospitality and course preparation in supporting the County to host this annual event.

As the matches progressed over the two days of intense competition, it became clear that James Robinson and Josh Bryan were making good progress through the rounds and in the semi-finals James defeated Lawrence Hill 5&4 whilst Josh overcame Luke Johnson 4&3.

The final between James and Josh began earlier than expected due to the excellent speed of play in the semi-finals and much thanks must go to the members of Stourbridge who stood aside and allowed the two players to complete their final match without any delay. It was James who played the steadier golf, playing to par and rarely making any errors. Josh 'opened the door' on a few occasions and before long it was James who secured victory by 5&4. Many congratulations to James Robinson ( Redditch Golf Club), who is the new 2014 Boys Matchplay Champion and commiserations to Josh Bryan ( Worcs G&CC) who put up a very strong challenge.

Thank you to Stuart Pritchard ( County Secretary) and the match referees, Tony Edwards and John Bothwood for their support in running this competition.
