2nd team Match Report and scoresheet v Derbyshire at Moseley

Captain's Match Report

2nd Team v Derbyshire at Moseley G.C. 4.8.13

Our match against Derbyshire was a hard battle against the weather and their team. After a bad start in the foursomes, being 4-1 down, the team was determined to work hard and dig deep to secure points in the afternoon singles.

The first four singles matches got us off to a great start with wins for Darren Smith, Paul Reeves, Lee Richardson and Matt Feavyour. Now all we needed were a couple of victories to bring home a win.  Unfortunately, the players the next 2 matches lost narrowly before another fine win by Liam Phipps gave us a little more hope towards the end.

It was an intense scene as the Worcestershire players and County Officials watched anxiously to see if someone could bring home a couple of much needed wins and it was down to Ollie Gough, George Bradley  and Craig Richardson to try and pull us through. Ollie and George were 1 down with 2 to play, and Craig was 4 down with 6 holes left to play.  I went over to all the lads, encouraging them to dig deeper. Ollie Gough was Level going down the 18th, but unfortunately he lost on the last hole. George pulled through with a well earned half, and Craig was 1 down playing the last.  With everyone watching, he played a great 2nd shot into the green with a 3 wood leaving a 20ft eagle putt to bring it back to level. However,  his opponent played a skillful chip shot and holed the putt to halve in birdies which just wasn't enough for us to secure an overall victory.

Final result:  Worcestershire 6 1/2 - Derbyshire 8 1/2.

Overall,  the team really showed me how much they wanted to pull it back from the morning and despite the result we still have a good chance to win the league with our final game away at Brocton Hall against Staffs on 1st September.

Thank you to all the officials for their great support on the day and to Moseley Golf Club for their warm hospitality and excellent course preparation.

A successful day saw Paul Reeves and Lee Richardson take maximum points to head the Chandler Shield table. There are five players mathematically in the running, but these two are now on very short odds.
