Worcestershire 2nd Team Captain, Russ Ager, had to call on some new names to complete his side for the season ending match against Nottinghamshire at Kidderminster GC on Sunday 6th September. Over the course of the match the new players would prove to be pivotal to the result.
Several of the matches in the morning foursomes could have gone either way, but Worcestershire were to find themselves 2 v 3 behind at lunch. The team were aware that a win would mean that the league title may still come to Worcestershire, although results elsewhere would have to go in our favour.
With this in mind the team set out on teh afternoon singles matches in a determined mood, and the overall match score was soon evened up, following a sparkling performance by Kidderminster member Scott Mason, who was 5 under par over 11 holes in completing his 9&7 victory. With a tense 1UP win for Josh Bryan and a 2&1 victory from Mark Dunkley our only other points from the top 7 matches, it became clear that we needed to win the last 3 matches out on the course. The two team new team members, Matt Osborn and Nathan Grant , completed excellent victories, to leave the whole result down to James Berwick, playing as anchor man.
James stood on the 18th tee 1UP and hit a perfect drive, and a beautiful pitch to 6 feet past the pin. His opponent was 25 feet past the pin, and facing a very difficult down hill putt. James looked to be in prime position, but he was to watch as his opponent duly rolled in his putt for a birdie 3. In front of a crowd of 25/30 people James showed his experience and managed to hole his putt to halve the hole, win his game, and secure an overall win for the team.
Both Russ Ager and Nottinghamshire Captain Andy Cook were to acknowledge that the game had been played in a great spirit, and hoped that all players would meet again next year in Nottinghamshire. They also expressed their thanks to Kidderminster GC for hosting the match and providing the course in such good condition. The catering was excellent, and everyone was well looked after by the catering bar and professional staff.
In his final speech of the season, Russ thanked his players for their support and effort. He also thanked the supporters on the day, who included Denis Hayes, Dave McDermott, and Bill Thompson.
