2nd Team v Staffordshire at Redditch GC on Sunday 2nd September 2018
Redditch Golf Club was the venue for my final game as captain against Staffordshire.
The side arrived knowing a strong win, coupled with defeats for Nottingham and Derbyshire, could see us end the day league champs. It was important we concentrated on getting the win first and foremost, and at lunch we were in a strong position 3.5 to 1.5 up. Strong wins for Bird/Howells 6&5, Reeves/Cullen 6&4 and a battling 1 up victory for Macpherson/Mee gave us a solid platform to push on in the afternoon singles.
Again a strong start with wins by Reeves 3&1, Bird 4&2, Howells 4&3, and Cullen 4&3 put us in a commanding position, the match was secure when Deehan halved. Further points strengthened our score, from Macpherson 2&1 and Ager 2&1, and capped a great 10-5 win.
I would like to thank the Staffordshire Team for the great sportsmanship they showed when there was an issue that meant that one of our players had to rush home whilst the morning foursomes were being played. It is extremely heartening to know that the spirit of the game is alive and well!!
Unfortunately Nottinghamshire also won 10-5, which means we finished runners up. A strong season, and well done to all the players this season, you have all been great and a pleasure to play with.
I must say a special thank you to all the support for the lads from officials and members of Redditch GC during the day, it’s always greatly appreciated by the team. Especially Dave McDermott who has been an ever present during my 2 years as captain.
It’s now time to pass over the prestigious captaincy to Duncan Macpherson, a perfect fit to take the side forward. Duncan has been a privilege to captain, as his commitment and desire to play for Worcestershire is second to none. Good luck Dunc you’ll do us all proud.
It has been a truly great honour to captain this great county and I will be for ever grateful for the opportunity.
Steve Bird, 2nd Team Captain
