2nd Team v Warwickshire at Coventry Hearsall GC on Sunday 13th May 2018
The essence of County Golf - Duncan McPherson plays his final shot to the 18th at Hearsall with the whole of the Worcs team on the fairway supporting him, whilst the Warks players look on.
The first match of the season presented us with the difficult task of trying to defeat Warwickshire away at Coventry Hearsall GC. Warwickshire have been a dominant force in recent times having not lost for over 2 years, so we knew how tough a task it would be.
The weekend started with a evening practice round for the players which proved vital as turning up on the day would have been a disadvantage due to the sheer speed of the greens, and the many blind tee shots.
The morning foursomes couldn't have gone much better. A great half by Campbell and Roberts was followed by wins for Bird/Fuell, Reeves/Ager, Dixon/Macpherson, and Howells/Rogers. It was a great morning's work but I kept telling the guys that we needed to start again in the afternoon as though the score was 0-0. We knew Warwickshire would be strong in the singles.
With 3 1/2 points required to confirm victory, Campbell went out no.1 and defeated Creed 1 up to get us off to a great start. The next few games went Warwickshire's way but strong wins for Reeves, Rogers, Macpherson, and a tremendous battling half by Ager meant that despite losing the singles 5 1/2 - 4 1/2, we secured a fine 9-6 victory overall.
FULL MATCH SCORE CARD
This result has given us a great start to the season, which we must build on. I must say well done to the new guys Mark Dixon, Tom Howells, and Luke Rogers for strong performances and settling into the side straight away.
A very proud day for myself and I'm especially proud of the lads, who demonstrated excellent team spirit throughout the day.
This great win over our local rivals was very welcome.
