Boulton Salver at Moseley GC on Sunday 19th May 2019 - REPORT

Adam Norman is being presented with the Boulton Salver by David Gillivray, County President.

Some 104 golfers arrived at Moseley GC on Sunday 19th May 2019 to contest this year's Boulton Salver. The format is 36 hole foursomes medal, with the best nett score winning the Salver for their club.

The players were to find the Moseley GC course in superb condition and a great challenge for some of the best golfers in the County.

The morning started at 8.00am, and the last afternoon tee time was set at 3.52pm, so it was going to be a long day for the players and officials.

Early scoring was good, and everyone was expecting that two low rounds would be needed to win. Highlights from the morning included a sensational gross 67 from the Kidderminster pair of Mark Dudley & Luke Rogers, and their nett 66.5 was to remain the best morning score of the 52 pairs. They were closely followed by three Moseley pairings, Chris Norman & Richard Sadler on 67.5; Dan Downes & Paul Garey on 69.5; and last year's winners, Adam Norman & Andy Goodyer, also on 69.5.

The players were provided with lunch before setting out for their afternoon rounds.

In the afternoon there were further sub 70 rounds, with an excellent 66.5 from another Kidderminster pair, Callum Hutchinson & Craig Richardson; a strong 67.5 from Melvyn Davies & Sean Williams from Churchill & Blakedown GC; and a 69.5 from another Moseley pairing, of Mark Dixon & Jason Lane.

Adam Norman & Andy Goodyer added an afternoon 68.5 to their morning 69.5 for a very impressive 138 total, setting a strong challenge for everyone else still out on the course. When Mark Dudley & Luke Rogers added a 76.5 to their morning round of 66.5 for a combined total of 143, only one pair out on the course seemed to have a realistic chance of overhauling Adam & Andy at the top of the leader board. This was the pair of Chris Norman (Adam's dad!!) & Richard Sadler, in the last match out. Everyone in the clubhouse watched them make an excellent birdie 4 on the last, with Richard holing a difficult 8 foot putt. People thought they may have done enough to win, but their afternoon 72.5 left them 2 shots adrift on 140.

Thus Adam & Andy had retained the Boulton Salver for Moseley GC. Unfortunately, Andy was unable to stay for the presentation, as he rushed home to see his partner and 3 day old baby, after playing 36 holes!

The presentation was conducted by David McGillivray, County President, and also a Moseley GC Past Captain. He thanked Moseley GC, especially the greens team, who had worked so hard to present the course in such excellent condition for the event. Thanks were also given to the bar and catering teams.

David went on to thank the referees, Tony Edwards, Brenda Binnie & John Brothwood; the starters, Rex Harrison, Dave McDermott & Ken Palfrey; the administration team of Denis Hayes, Brian Morris, Dave McDermott, Stuart Pritchard & Debbie Pritchard.

On the basis that no pair could win more than one prize, prizes were handed out to:

Adam Norman & Andy Goodyer (Moseley GC) - The Boulton Salver
Richard Sadler & Chris Norman (Moseley GC) - 2nd Nett
Callum Hutchinson & Craig Richardson (Kidderminster GC) - 3rd Nett
Mark Dudley & Luke Rogers (Kidderminster GC) - Best Gross
Mark Dixon & Jason Lane (Moseley) - Best PM Gross
Melvyn Davies & Sean William (Churchill & Blakedown) - Best PM Nett
Dan Downes & Paul Garey (Moseley GC) - Best AM Gross

Traditionally, the winners club host the event the following year, so The County are hoping that Moseley GC will host again in 2020, after doing such a wonderful job this rime round!
