Boys 4 Counties Tournament - Walmley GC on18th & 19th April 2017
Following fine pre season wins against Gwent and a Kings Norton GC Scratch Team, the Worcestershire County Boys Team arrived at Walmely GC for the annual 4 Counties Tournament in fine spirits. Most of the team had travelled across to Walmley GC to have a practice round in the weeks before the tournament, but they all decided to walk the course again on the first morning to have a look at the pin positions.
During lunch Ian Henry (Team Manager) and Joe Price (Team Captain) went through the course management that would be needed to score well on the tricky Walmley course. This was to prove vital preparation for the first match against Gloucestershire on the first afternoon.
The format of the tournament is a round robin event, with each county playing the other 3 counties, in 8 singles matches, over 2 days.
In the Tuesday afternoon match against Gloucestershire, there were fine wins for Jake Kelly, Alex Band, Ted Pickering, Will Stott and Ollie Lowe, and a fighting half from Nathan Slater giving us a 5 1/2 v 2 1/2 win.
Wednesday morning saw us play a very strong Staffordshire side, with Joe Price, Jake Kelly, Nathan Slater, Ted Pickering all winning and Ollie Lowe picking up the decisive half point to cap a 4 1/2 v 3 1/2 win.
This meant that a victory in the Wednesday afternoon match against Warwickshire, or a win by Gloucestershire against Staffordshire, would see us win the tournament. Unfortunately we could just not get over the line in our own match, and when Staffordshire managed a win against Gloucestershire, the tournament victory was snatched away by a single individual game point.
The boys were dissappointed, but had shown great team spirit and mental strength over the three rounds, which must surely put the team in good shape for the rest of the season.
