Hollywood GC hosted the Boys and Senior Matchplay Finals on Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th September 2015. Both days started with a little mist, but the sun soon broke through, and the players were to benefit from two beautiful, warm, sunny days.
The course was superbly presented by the Greens Staff from Hollywood GC. The attention to detail has certainly moved up a notch under the new Course Manager, Dale Housden. It was a very busy two days at the club, with many members and visitors out on the course, and all were very complimentary about the new look. Coupled with a warm welcome by Club Captain, Bernie Jeanneret, and some excellent organisational skills of Jamie Hillier, Club Professional, the County would certainly recommend the club and course to anyone who wanted to visit. Indeed, the County is keen to arrange a couple of fixtures again in 2016.
16 boys from across Worcestershire lined up on Saturday morning for the first round, with some quality golf being played. 3 of the 8 matches went to the 18th hole, one of which went down the 19th. Round two on Saturday afternoon saw some more quality golf to decide the semi finalist for Sunday morning- Will Stott and Ollie Lowe, both from Bewdley Pines, Nick Johnson from Hagley G&CC, and Jake Kelly from Ombersley,
The semi finals were both close and tense affairs, with Nick Johnson requiring an additional hole to see off a strong challenge from Will Stott and Jake Kelly sneeking past Ollie Lowe by 3&1. Both Will and Ollie are a credit to Bewdley Pines, and are sure to figure in many more County events in the future. Nick Johnson was hoping to finish his junior career with a final trophy but struggled a little on Sunday afternoon, eventually going down to some more consistent, solid play from Jake Kelly. Jake, in taking the John Fraser Cup, completed a highly successful season, having clinched the Worcestershire Junior Order of Merit only a week ago at Hagley G&CC.
The seniors play one less round in their matchplay finals compared to the boys, and therefore, they were able to join in the fun at Hollywood GC on the Saturday afternoon. Out of the 4 matches, one finished on the 17th, one on the 18th and one on the 19th hole. The Sunday semi-finalists were Roger Martin, Bill Thompson and Laurence Hawker, all from Kings Norton GC, and Do Hopper from Worcester G&CC.
Roger Martin and Bill Thompson just edged past their opponents to set up an all Kings Norton G.C. Final. The final itself was a closely contested affair with some superb golf and fabulous recovery skills on show. Overall, Bill Thompson was just a little too consistent for Roger Martin and won the Senior Matchplay Salver for a fourth consecutive year.
As WUGC Chairman, Bill Thompson presented the John Fraser Cup to Jake Kelly and was, in turn, presented with his trophy by Tony Edwards, WUGC Chief Referee. Bill and Jake both praised the Hollywood GC venue, and Bill also thanked the County volunteers who had ensured the smooth running of the finals - Mark Ralphs, official starter, and John Brothwood, John Whitehead and Tony Edwards the referees.
