Boys Championships - Droitwich GC Monday 25th July 2016 - REPORT

The 2016 Boys Championship was held at Droitwich GC on Monday 25th July who had hosted their own Junior Open the previous Thursday. Many of the boys had sensibly opted to get a preview of the course by playing in the Droitwich Junior Open, and the scoring had been excellent. Thus, much was expected on the day of The County Championship. Joe Price (Hagley G&CC) was in early with a first round score of 71 gross, which was to remain the best of the morning, although closely followed by Brandon Sarfo (Gaudet Luce) with a 73, Nathan Slater (Bewdley Pines) on 74 and 75s from Matt Osborn (The Abbey) & Dan Doyle (Stourbridge).

When Joe carded another fine 71 gross in the afternoon, it was apparent that his combined total of 142 would be the score to beat. Many challenges came and went as Joe waited in the clubhouse for 2 1/2 hours for his fellow competitors to finish. News came in that Matt Osborn, in the last group out, and needing a gross 66 to win, was 3 under par after 9. Thus, the crowd waited anxiously for Matt to finish, and his 2 under par 67 gross meant that there would need to be a play off to decide the Championship.

The 3 hole play off (1st, 17th & 18th) saw Matt come out on top, winning the Championship and the Mansell Cup. Matt will go forward to represent Worcestershire at the England Golf Champion of Champions event later in the year. Joe's fantastic golf saw him win the nett Championship (The Rigbey Cup).

The U16 Championship was won by Ted Pickering (Worcester G&CC) with rounds of 76 and 74. He just edged out Cameron Green (Wharton Park) and Rhys Hopkins (Fulford Heath) who both shot 151s over 36 holes.

Prizes were also awarded for the best am gross and nett and best pm gross and nett. The best nett of the day was recorded by Richard Vaughan from Blackwell with an 80-15=65. Richard was rewarded with second place in the Rigbey Cup, missing out to Joe Price by a single shot.

There is also a club team prize for the best 3 nett scores over  36 holes, and this was won by Stourbridge GC with a combined total of 428, from Dan Doyle, Jack Belli and George Westwood. They also go forward to represent Worcestershire at the English Junior Champion Club event in August.

Presentations were made by Will Painter (WUGC President) and Ian Rone (Droitwich GC Chairman). Will thanked Ian for Droitwich hosting the event, and passed on the compliments of the players for a course in excellent condition. Will also thanked all the members from Droitwich GC who turned out to act as marshalls, together with the green staff, pro shop staff, the catering team and the bar staff. Thanks were also expressed to the small army of County Officials who were present on the day - Referees John Whitehead, Brenda Binnie, and Tony Edwards; starters Alec Mackie, Denis Hayes & Dave McDermott; Rex Harrison, Dave McDermott, Denis Hayes & Jim Gray on the administration desks.

In his acceptance speech, Matt thanked all the officials from both Droitwich GC and from The County. He also thanked all the parents for their support! It was pleasing to note just how many parents had been around during the day, and how many had stayed for the presentations.

And finally...... a big thank you in general for all the help from the members at Droitwich GC though out the day, for their generosity of spirit towards the boys and the event, and especially for the gentleman who helped collect the very wet County Banners at the end of the event.
