So finally the time had come for the Four Counties tournament, some six months later than planned due to the snow in April. The team had prepared meticulously back in March. We walked the course, mapped the greens and played an eighteen hole practise round.

When we arrived on Wednesday the team gathered as usual for a drink and something to eat. We discussed the order for the first match and then walked the opening and closing few holes just to remind ourselves what lay ahead and to mark in our planners the wind direction.

Worcestershire Vs Warwickshire

As normal this match against our local rivals was particularly important and as they were the only team to beat us in the league this season we wanted a win more so.

The match started well as Oliver Farrell recorded a 6&5 victory shortly followed by number two James Robinsons 4&2 win. Warwickshire battled back and once again it came down to our anchor match. Josh McMahon was all square with two to play and we needed half a point to secure our first win. The entire team and supporters followed the match down seventeen and both players made great up and downs to half the hole. Josh tee’d off first on the eighteenth hitting the centre of the green with his hybrid. Callum made a good two putt for par meaning Josh had to hole out from three foot to win. He held his nerve and holed the crucial putt. Worcestershire win.

 Worcestershire Vs Gloucestershire

Due to the clocks changing and the daylight hours being at a minimum this meant a 7am tee time. The lads gathered at 6.15am in the dark to again confirm the order of play. It was vital that we arrived early to prepare efficiently as a win would setup a chance of winning the shield. Once again we had narrowly lost to Gloucestershire at the Severnside tournament and the lads wanted revenge.

Once again Oliver Farrell gave us the first point with his 5&4 win. James Robinson gained his second win of the tournament before Josh Bryan and Josh McMahon finished strongly at the rear of the order. This gave Worcestershire a 4 – 3 lead with only Tom Godfrey’s match still playing. Tom found himself on the 18th tee all square and needing to half the hole at least to gain the crucial half point. Tom played the hole very solidly and his par was good enough for a half and Worcestershire’s second victory.

Worcestershire Vs Staffordshire

We headed into this match knowing that it would probably be tough as Staffordshire had a very strong team on paper. The good news was that we had established a lead and a draw would be enough to win the shield.

We couldn’t change the order for this match so the lads headed out into the rain to prepare following a quick lunch break. We were determined to win.

Staffordshire took the top three points but again a fantastic victory of 7&5 started the ball rolling for Worcestershire. Josh McMahon won 5&4 before Josh Bryan wrapped up his game 4&3. It was a tense moment as news came through that Staffordshire had taken a 4 – 3 lead with Tom Godfrey the only match remaining. This meant we needed Tom to win for us to draw the match. Tom played the eighteenth but unfortunately halved the hole and his game meaning we had lost by half a point.

We quickly walked back to the clubhouse as there was still hope. If Warwickshire could prevent Gloucestershire from winning we would still win the tournament on game points. It was so close and as the last game in the last match came in we learned that Gloucestershire had won 4 ½ - 3 ½.

Again we had come up slightly short. This was the story of our season finishing equal on points for the league also yet losing on game points. On reflection this has been a very good season for Worcestershire under 18s. We had been in contention in all competitions and with this experience I believe next season could be very interesting.

I’d like to thank Matt Nixon the Warwickshire secretary for all his hard work rearranging this tournament and Harborne Golf Club for there fine hospitality. I also would like to thank everyone who followed and supported Worcestershire as I know the boys enjoy performing in front of you and representing your county.

Now it’s time to rebuild the squad and start the winter training program. See you in 2014.

Worcestershire Under 18s Manager
