Boys Mixed Age Texas Scramble at Bromsgrove GC on Sunday 4th September 2016

Boys from across the County Squads and from the County Development Centres gathered at Bromsgrove Golf Centre on Sunday 4th September for a Texas Scramble. This was the first time that the County Coaches, Tom Warbrick and Ian Henry, had tried this fun format as a way of using some of the U18 squad as mentors to some of the younger boys.

The key thoughts were for all players to look at the variety of shot selections available for each stroke, and to encourage team work. This was evident throughout with team captains making sure that everyone in their team contributed to discussions, and had the opportunity to suggest how they would play each shot. It was noticeable how many different options were on offer for the short shots around the greens!

Throughout the day the quality of golf was excellent. There were the usual strong performances from the older lads, with Joe Price, Will Stott and Ollie Lowe showing their skill and power. However, in this team format it was important that everyone contributed - there were some impressively powerful playing from Matt Slater, Luke Rolinson, George Westwood, Ben Wadley, Mackenzie Butler and Josh Marshall.

I was impressed with all the boys but especially impressed by the standard of golf from some of the younger lads. The swings were silky smooth, and I am sure that we all saw some of the stars of the future. Hugh Adams, Louie Stott, Tom Lennon, Ben Parsons, James Ilsley and Harry Hawksford.

I would not normally pick on an individual from the day, but one of the players in the last group looked like he could be good when he gets older. Look out for the up and coming Tom Warbrick!!

TEAM 1: Joe Price, Louie Stott, Josh Marshall, Harry Hawksford - Gross Score 62

TEAM 2: Will Stott, Ben Parsons, Luke Rolinson, James Ilsley - Gross Score 62

TEAM 3: Ollie Lowe, Hugh Adams, George Westwood, Matt Slater - Gross Score 59

TEAM 4: Ben Wadley, Tom Lennon, Mackenzie Butler, Tom Warbrick - Gross Score 60

The boys had a wonderful day, and the winning captain, Ollie Lowe, thanked everyone at Bromsgrove GC for their help in putting on the day. The welcome from all the staff was superb and the food was spot on. The course was in excellent condition and is a fine test of golf - if you haven't played Bromsgrove GC in the past, or for some years, you should certainly give it a visit..
