The Severnside Tournament is a long standing event which has been running for forty six years. It is a round robin tournament played between Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Glamorgan and Gwent. Each county selects eight players and seven of the team play each of the three matches with the format being single matchplay.

The Worcestershire side arrived at St Mellons Golf Club early on the 17th March so that they could all play a practise round and figure out the best way to tackle each of the holes. All but one of our players had played in this event previously, so the team had a wealth of experience.

Our first match of the tournament was again Gwent on the Thursday afternoon. The whole team knew how important it was to start with a win, as this tournament is always tightly contested. Joe lead the team out and as usual got us off to a winning start. Nathan and Jake followed shortly after with win to give Worcestershire a commanding position in the match. Ollie Lowe’s game went the distance, and a brilliant approach to the eighteenth set up a birdie three to earn a fine half point and put us on the brink of our first victory. In the end Worcester Golf & Country Club duo of Alex and Ted delivered two more winning points and Worcestershire were off to a great start 5.5 to 1.5.

The second day and first match saw Worcestershire facing what we believed were arguably the strongest team Glamorgan. Both teams were very much up for the contest and we all felt that this was the deciding match of the tournament. Captain Joe started the ball rolling with a half point in a game littered with birdies. Unfortunately Jake couldn’t quite reproduce his level from the previous day and lost on the seventeenth. Nathan left his driver in the bag and it proved a good move as he added the first point with a 4&2 win. This would mean we needed another two points to draw the match. Unfortunately the remaining matches didn’t quite get the brakes we needed and Glamorgan finished strongly to beat us 5.5 to 1.5. This was very disappointing as we all knew we would rely on Gwent to have a big upset in the afternoon to give us a chance.

Gloucestershire were our final opponents of the tournament and even though the team were in need of a favour from Gwent the team could only control what was in front of them and beat Gloucestershire by as big a margin as possible. We shuffled the order a little to freshen things up and it worked well as we finished the tournament with a fine victory against our local rivals 4.5 to 2.5. The highlight of this match being a fantastic performance from Jack winning 7&5 to win his first point of the tournament.

Glamorgan beat Gwent so once again Worcestershire finished a respectable second in this tournament. If there was a league table for consistency over the previous two years in tournament play, we would be top with our constancy. So overall we were pleased with our performance and it set us up well for our final match of the season away to Staffordshire.

I’d like to thank all the Stuart, Roger and all the players for their efforts throughout this tournament. Also I’d like to thank St Mellons Golf Club for hosting this prestigious event. The course was in fantastic condition and held up very well in what can only be described as wet wintery weather for August.
