The Worcestershire under sixteen boys travelled to Brailsford Golf Club to play Derbyshire in their second league match of the season. The weather was poor as the players travelled, but the forecast was to brighten up as the day went on, and it certainly did.
Pictured - Matthew Slater who won 1 1/2 points out of 2 on his U16 debut, as did Ben Wadley.
The morning team talk mainly focused on trying to improve our foursomes performances. The week before we had perfomed well in the singles but left too much to do after the morning, so we wanted to make sure this changed. The pairings were changed and freshened up, especially with the arrival of Ben Wadley and Matthew Slater, making their under sixteen debuts.
Ted Pickering and vice captain Alex Band lead the team out in the morning, with newly crowned Worcestershire Under Sixteen County Champion Ted hitting the opening tee shot of the day straight down the middle. Their match was closely contested until a nice birdie two on sixteen made it dormie before they final sealed victory on the seventeenth green. The pairings of Jack Severn our Captain and Josh Wood soon followed with another two and one victory before Luke Rolinson and Rhys Hopkins went one better with a three and one victory. Thing were looking good. However the final three matches on the course were extremely tight and all continued down the eighteenth hole. James Lloyd and Aaron Bryan the Worcester G&CC pairing managed to match their half point that they won a week earlier to remain unbeaten in the league. Patrick Leydon and George Westwood also kept their unbeaten record as they secured another half point. So it was now just the débutantes Ben Wadley and Matthew Slater left out on the course. They were two down with two to play but didn't ever look like giving up. Their efforts were rewarded as they managed to battle back and snatch a half on the last to give Worcestershire an unbeaten start to the day and a lead of three points. Just the start we had spoken about in the team meeting.
Derbyshire started the single fast as they took the first three points to level the match up. Josh Wood stopped Derbyshire's momentum as he won three and two in his higher than normal starting position as number four. Luke and Rhys followed Josh with half points and then we secured a fine victory as we won the final five matches on the course.

So a win and a loss to open the season for the under sixteens. This win was vital as it gives us a chance to potentially challenge for the league in the triangular match on the 8th August.
Many thanks to Roger Martin, Stuart Pritchard and all the parents that stayed to support throughout the day. I know the boys value your support and I think it really helps.
