The first match of the U18 League season, and the start of the defence of the 2017 West Midlands League Title, was a match against Derbyshire at Kings Norton GC on Sunday 22nd April.
Both teams arrived at 8.30am for team talks, followed by breakfast and a full warm up routine before the start of the 5 morning foursomes matches at 10.00am. There were some new partnerships in the Worcestershire team and to finish the morning session with a 3 -2 lead was a great result. There were some good performances, with both the Alex Band/Cameron Green team and the James Lloyd/Evan Lewis team birdieing the last hole to ensure ½ points from their matches.
The afternoon singles ebbed and flowed with 2 points out of the first 3 games going to Worcestershire through wins by Cameron Green and Jack Severn. However, the overall result was always going to be close and this was highlighted by 5 of the last 8 matches all going down the 18th hole. With a win by Aaron Bryan, and 4 half points from James Lloyd, Harrison Leaver, James Yorke and Patrick Leydon the Worcestershire Boys hit the all-important 8 point target to take the overall match 8 -7.

In their speeches both Captains were keen to praise Kings Norton GC for producing a course in such excellent condition after weeks of bad weather and heavy overnight rain. There was also high praise for the catering and bar staff for looking after everyone so well all day.
Ian Henry, Team Manager, and Roger Martin, Assistant Team Manager, were delighted to see a number of parents out supporting the boys, and both County President, Grenville Rose, and County Chairman, Bill Thompson were present for much of the day.
A great start to the 2018 season.
