We arrived at Shirland golf club after a very early start and two hour drive for some. With most of the players part of the four counties team we were confident, but knew fitness would play its part.
The aim for the foursomes was to try and come out with at least a half, but at the same time make sure every player gathered good information for the singles. The first two games were tight as normal, but Worcestershire had a narrow lead through nine. Joe and Nathan held their lead to win 2&1 and Ted and Cameron showed good resilience to win 1up on the eighteenth. Added to those two points was another win by Alex and Harry, who have now won three points from three this season in the foursomes. Worcestershire led 3-2 at lunch.
With ten points up for grabs in the singles, the match was very much all to play for. Derbyshire came out fighting as we expected, but as I watched I was confident our experience and character would come through. After nine holes all the matches were very even, but as we have done in recent matches, we started to turn the screw on the back nine and eventually won the singles 7-3.
This was a great start to the season and our first league win in over twelve months. Let's hope we can continue our good form when we face Warwickshire in May.
Thanks to Stuart Pritchard, Roger Martin and Scott Severn for their support throughout the day. The boys really get a lift from seeing you guys out there supporting.
