Club Team and Individual Handicap Tournament - Report&pictures 12.5.16

Inaugural Club Team and Individual Handicap Tournament for the Brenda Smith Cup (Individual) and Dave McDermott Bowl (Team)

Venue: Fulford Heath G.C. Thursday 12th May 2016

The patio had a 'continental' feel to it as players basked in the warm sunshine during this inaugural tournament. Warm, sunny, but very breezy weather was the order of the day and the course was presented to a tremendous standard by Kim Blake, the Head Greenkeeper. The aim of this tournament, thanks to the innovative thinking of the County Secretary, Stuart Pritchard, was to provide a competition for higher handicap members, which would honour the valued efforts of long serving Executive Officers, Brenda Smith (Honorary Life Member) and David McDermott ( County Vice President). As a result, 147 members were selected to represent their clubs and they began in earnest at 08.00 a.m. playing a stableford in three balls.

The County organisers ensured everything was in place to make sure everyone involved felt that this was a special day and that they would be warmly welcomed. Each player was given a Centenary County Book on arrival, they were all announced on the first tee and three top referees were on hand all day out on the course.

Barry Adams ( Cocks Moor Woods GC) pictured below, was in the first group to tee off and was full of praise

for the County's efforts saying " What a great day it's been. I was quite nervous on the first tee having just had my name announced but once I was underway I loved the course. It was in fantastic condition and it's great that the County have started off such a wonderful competition for handicap golfers."

As play progressed, it was clear that the blustery conditions and the length of some holes

after the recent rain was proving to be quite a challenge for many of the competitors. The brooks on the 7th and 12th were busy places and the referees were in high demand throughout the day.

The three referees were Tony Edwards, John Whitehead and Brenda Binnie ( pictured below)

Nevertheless, it was the Halesowen trio of Mike Willetts, Michael Howard and Lee Grice who collated 99 points between them to take the Dave McDermott Bowl for the best club team. In addition, Lee Grice, had the golfing day of his life, scoring 36 points to take the Brenda Smith Trophy for the top individual prize.

The headline results for the Team Event were : 1st Halesowen G.C. ( 99pts) 2nd Little Lakes 'A' ( 97pts) 3rd Fulford Heath 'B' ( 92pts)

The excellent catering manager, Gary Kinley and Bar manager, Tim Higgs, kept everyone well fed and watered whilst the Club Professional, Richard Davies, was extremely supportive in providing buggies and PGA sound equipment.

The Fulford Heath Club Captain, John Winspur, was extremely proud that his club was the first host of such a competition and was keen to praise the efforts of the County and his club staff for their sterling work. Will Painter ( County President) reiterated John's comments in his closing address before asking Brenda Smith and Dave McDermott to present their trophies to the respective winners. Such was the success of this tournament that suitable venues are now being sought for the 2017 event. It's clear from the feedback received, that this competition will have a secure place in the County's competition calendar.
