25 clubs from across Worcestershire were represented in the annual Worcestershire Captains & Guests Invitational Tournament, held at Hollywood GC on Monday 24th September 2018. They were joined by one team representing the County Executive, Pete Adams (Past President) and Paul Newman (County Senior Captain).
The format of the event is a 4BBB stableford, and thus there were 13 matches starting from either the 1st or 10th tee. With professional expertise all 13 matches were started by County Vice President, Dave McDermott - easily coping with the 2 paces he had to take between the two sets of white tees!
The Hollywood course was in excellent condition, and the weather forecast was for a cool but sunny day. All 52 players reported that they enjoyed the course, although some found the fast, true greens a little tricky!
There were 5 scores of 40 points, but only prizes for the first 3 places. Thus it was extremely unfortunate that Alan Gatland & Richard Young from Bewdley Pines walked away empty handed after their 40 points which was compiled with two consistent halves of 20 points, but only good enough for 4th place.
5th place was taken by Chris Vanes & Rob Woodall from Dudley GC, who picked up the prize for best front 9, with 22 points, whilst best back 9 was won by John Holt & Will Painter from Kidderminster GC with 21 points.
The top 3 places were decided on count back, with 3rd place going to Naz Jandu & Jim McQuoid from Kings Norton GC based on the back 9. The top 2 places could only be separated based on their last 3 holes, with the Rose Hill team of Steve Green & Steve Frost taking 2nd place, and Carl Shakes & Jeremy Clarke from Droitwich GC taking 1st place.
Winners, Jeremy Clarke (l) & Carl Shakes (r) from Droitwich GC.
2nd place, Steve Green (l) & Steve Frost (r) from Rose Hill GC.
3rd place, Naz Jandu (l) & Jim McQuoid (r) from Kings Norton GC.
Full score sheet.
After the game, the 52 players were joined by 4 County officials, Stuart & Debbie Pritchard, Dave McDermott, and Past President, Bill Thompson for an excellent two course meal prepared by Gary and his team.
Bill thanked Hollywood GC for hosting the event, and praised the green keeping team for preparing the course so well for the players. Bill also thanked the officials from all the clubs that had supported the day, and thanked all the clubs in Worcestershire that provide such excellent support to the County year after year. He also thanked Stuart & Debbie Pritchard and Dave McDermott for running the day.
Bill also provided a very short summary of the County successes in 2018, which included Hugh Adams (Hagley) winning the Reid Trophy, and the County Senior Team, under Paul Newman's captaincy, winning the West Midlands league for the first time.
On collecting the winners vouchers, Carl Shakes (Captain of Droitwich GC) also thanked Hollywood GC for hosting the event, and all the County personnel for managing such a smooth event.
The County hope to see most of the players representing their clubs again at the Half Yearly meeting of the Council, being held at Bromsgrove GC on Thursday 4th October, starting at 7.30pm.
