County Matchplay Championships - Sat & Sun 21st & 22nd July 2018 - REPORT

The County Matchplay Championship was contested at Droitwich GC on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd July 2018, with a number of the quarter finals also played in the week before the finals because of prior commitments for some of the players.

By the Sunday morning, only 4 players were left, with the semi finals being contested by Oliver Farrell (Evesham) v Luke Rogers (Kidderminster) and the current holder James Robinson (Redditch) v Richard Sadler (Moseley). The standard of golf in both matches was superb, with many holes halved in birdies. Indeed, Luke Rogers was 6 under par over 15 holes in defeating Oliver Farrell, and Richard Sadler was 5 under par in beating James Robinson.

The final was scheduled for a 12.00 midday start on Sunday, and would be contested by Luke Rogers and Richard Sadler.

The final would be played in very hot conditions, as had the morning semi finals, and it was to be a trial of endurance, as well as a test of golfing skill. There would also be a sizeable crowd following the match, with a great deal of support from Kidderminster GC.

The early skirmishes were very even, but little by little Luke began to build a lead, going 2 up at the turn after holing a bunker shot. Another couple of holes went in Luke's direction, as he continued his high quality golf - hitting his tee shot to 3 feet on the par 3 11th hole, which was actually further away than his tee shot in the morning semi final! Despite a brief resurgence by Richard, the match was to end on the par 3 15th with Luke again hitting a beautiful iron to the middle of the green.

The presentation was held back in the clubhouse, by Dave McDermott, County Vice President. He thanked Droitwich GC for hosting the event, and praised the greens team for preparing a course to such an excellent condition given the lack of rain over the previous 7/8 weeks. Dave also thanked the catering and bar staff for looking after everyone so well, and thanked Phil Cundy for looking after him and the other County Volunteers on both days. Dave also thanked the County referees who had looked after each individual match - Brenda Binnie, Tony Edwards and Clive Werrett.

Winner Luke Rogers (Kidderminster GC) receives the trophy from Dave McDermott, WUGC Vice President.

On collecting the Derek Greey trophy, Luke Rogers also thanked Droitwich GC and the County Volunteers and referees for running the event.
