County Seniors in National Finals at Chipping Sodbury - 3rd to 6th Oct 2016 REPORT

COUNTY SENIORS in NATIONAL FINALS at Chipping Sodbury Golf Club - 3rd to 6th October 2016

Reaching the national finals for the second year in a row was a great achievement by the County Senior team. The other finalists, Lancashire, BB&O and Devon are all able to draw from a much bigger pool of players and, therefore, their teams are characterised by a number of Internationals, holding handicaps of scratch or better. Therefore, it was a daunting task ahead for the Worcestershire team as they faced Lancashire on their first day.

Despite all the practice and preparation nothing prepares you for that first tee shot and emotions were running high as the foursomes matches began in earnest. The Lancashire pairings were just too strong and they won all three opening matches convincingly. The singles followed a similar pattern but a fighting halved match from Bryan Swain saved the day. The final result was 8.5 to .5 to Lancashire.

The second day against BB&O followed a similar pattern.  Although losing all three foursomes matches, the match results were much closer. In the singles there was success at last with wins from Bill Thompson and Paul Newman. The final result was 7-2 to BB&O.

On the last day, against Devon, the Worcestershire team finally had some foursomes success with halved matches by Thompson & Pates and Newman and Carpenter. The singles were a much closer affair and wins from Thompson, Pates and Painter, whilst other matches went down the 17th and 18th, almost resulted in our first ever match half. In the end, Devon won 5-4.

The eventual winners, Lancashire, defeated BB&O 6-3 in a closely fought final match. Many congratulations to them. Click on this link for all the results at England Golf

Overall, it was another great golfing experience for all our County seniors. Many new friendships were made and old acquaintances renewed. 36 holes a day, for three days, took its toll, both physically and mentally. Pete Adams, (pictured opposite) the County Seniors Captain, did a great job in motivating and organising the team throughout the whole event. Will Painter, County President, presented Pete with a commemoration plaque  as a momento for all his efforts in getting the team to the National Finals.

The County Senior players would like to thank everyone from Worcestershire who made the journey to Chipping Sodbury to support, lend a hand or caddy for our players. It's much appreciated by all. There were also many messages of support on social media throughout the three days.

Finally, thank you to the Worcestershire Golf Union Executive for their marvellous support for all the players. Nothing was too much trouble and the players were provided with all they needed to have every chance of performing at their best.
