Droitwich Shield, Kidderminster Cup and R&A Salver Finals - 28th April 2019

Blackwell GC was the host for this year's Inter Club Knockout Finals, with Moseley & Worcester G&CC competing for the Droitwich Shield (Mens Scratch Foursomes); Moseley & Wharton Park competing for the Kidderminster Cup (Seniors Scratch Foursomes); and The Abbey (represented by John Finch & Ashley Davies) playing Redditch GC (represented by Paul & Chris Hastings) in the R&A Salver Final (Handicap 4BBB).

The day dawned cool and damp, but with the promise of better weather later in the afternoon. Unfortunately, the sun only really shone after the matches ended - such is golf in England in the spring!

Despite the poor weather over the preceding few days the Blackwell course was in absolutely superb condition, and all the players were heard to comment on how much they enjoyed playing on the testing course. Combined with the excellent service from the catering and bar staff, the overall welcome from Blackwell GC could not have been better.

The format of the day was that the 3 scratch foursomes matches for the Droitwich Shield were first off at 10.00am, followed by the 3 scratch foursomes matches for the Kidderminster Cup at 10.30am, and finally the 4BBB match for the R&A Salver at 11.00am.

Each final had it's own referee - John Brothwood (left) covered the Kidderminster Cup matches; John Whitehead (centre) looked after the Droitwich Shield matches; and Tony Edwards (right) handled the R&A Salver final.

In the Droitwich Shield, Moseley GC took an early lead in a couple of matches and despite a fighting half from the Worcester G&CC pair of Ben Woodward & Aaron Bryan, Moseley ran out 2 1/2 v 1/2 winners.

The Kidderminster Cup was to follow a similar pattern to the Droitwich Shield, with Moseley GC taking early leads in two of the matches. Once again there was a close finish in one of the matches with Ian Warner & Keith Holmes (Moseley) halving their match against Norbeth Salmon & Tim Ball (Wharton Park), but the other two matches went the way of Moseley to give them a victory by 2 1.2 v 1/2.
