2016 EG BOYS COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP – MIDLAND QUALIFYING AT KIDDERMINSTER GOLF CLUB
Firstly I would like to congratulate Kidderminster Golf Club on presenting a course in excellent condition, and being great hosts.
We arrived on the Wednesday to prepare with one last practice round to finalise each individuals game plan. The players had played the course many times, but realised the importance of this final practice round to look at conditions which had become much firmer and faster than they had previously played, and also looking at possible pins.
The message for the players for the 36 holes Qualifying event was focus/concentration, stick to their game plan, and patience when hitting into the greens - because of the firm surfaces, if you missed the fairway you could not attack the pins.
The players Matthew Osborn, Nathan Grant, Nathan Slater, Ben Finch, Jake Kelly, and Joe Price were aware that on these days 90% of the field would under perform, and it is vitally important to grind out a score if they were one of those 90%, as with 5 score from 6 to count scoring would be high. Our team has great talent, and has been thought to deal with the indifference that golf brings when playing in competition.
Individually Matthew Osborn had two good rounds of 72, total 144 finishing 2nd by one shot, and with a touch of disappointment as in both rounds he got it 3 under par at some stage. Nathan Grant shot 2 rounds under his handicap, and Joe Price had a 74 very good second round after a poor first round.
I was very proud of all the players the way they battled for every shot, and we know they have the ability to win this event, but finished a respectable 3rd team behind winners Northamptonshire, and 2nd placed Staffordshire. This was a good experience for all, including myself to learn more about how I can help each player improve there performance.
