EG Seniors County Championship - Midland Qualifying - Hagley G&CC on Thursday 13th August 2015

Whilst all the thanks were expressed on the day a written record should be made of just how much time, effort and planning went into making the County Sixes the success it was, the result being the icing on the cake. A big, big thank you to Hagley Golf and Country Club and to all the staff for all their hard work.

It is fair to say that practice makes perfect or it certainly helps as we enjoyed two very successful practice rounds at the course fully supported by Graham Yardley and the professional staff. The conditions on both days for the practice rounds was almost perfect so it came as a bit of a leveller when on the day the temperature dropped and the wind changed direction! All those notes on distances and clubbing went straight out of the window, and to add to the problems we lost the services of one of our long-serving players, Mr Bryan Swain, with a muscle spasm in his back!

This event I firmly believe was won in the morning as four of our players recorded scores of 74,78,78,79 with the fifth player scoring 81. With five scores to count from six we had made a very solid start. Conditions for all players definitely changed as the day went by. A chilly wind together with an annoying drizzle made shooting good scores a tough ask, which only highlights the magnificent score of 72 shot by Steve Carpenter in the afternoon, a truly sublime effort.

Steve Carpenter receives his prize from Bob Davies, MGU President, for posting the best 36 hole score of 146, with rounds of 74 +72.

As the afternoon went by the tension was mounting as several counties were in contention and as the last cards were recorded it became a close call as Shropshire & Herefordshire put in a late challenge, only to fall a few shots short, leaving Worcestershire clear winners.

My sincere thanks go to the players:

Steve Carpenter

Bill Thompson

Peter Craddock

Roger Martin

Martin Cartwright

Will Painter

The finals are at The Robin Hood GC in Solihull on the 6th, 7th and 8th of October and it is hoped that good support will be forthcoming when we play.

Seniors Captain
