EGU Midland Boys Qualifier 28.5.14 Full Report

Report on the MGU County Sixes Midland Qualifier

at  Greetham Valley Golf Club, Leicestershire 28.5.1

The signature hole at Greetham Valley, the 18th.

The weather once again played a large part in this two day fixture. We left Worcester early on Tuesday morning and the rain fell heavily throughout the journey. The team gathered for a meeting over lunch and we decided to head out and play our practice round so as to prepare for the following day.

The boys made the most of this practice round noting tee shot lines, wind direction and putting to possible pin positions.

Unfortunately, as we woke on the tournament day, it was still raining and the forecast was not great for the rest of the day. The morning scores were very mixed with the majority of the field struggling in the wet conditions. However Oliver Gough positioned the ball fantastically throughout his round and shot a superb 72 (level) to post the third best score of the morning. The rest of the team couldn't quite bring home enough scores in the mid seventies to put us in a stronger position for the second round.

After lunch, the weather didn’t improve much but luckily the greens staff were continuously on hand to squeegee the greens. They worked tirelessly and kept the event going.

James Robinson plays a deft chip at the 18th

At lunch, we were positioned around the middle of the leaderboard but everyone believed they could improve on their morning scores especially as the weather had slightly improved. Tom Godfrey came in with a 74 gross which was a brilliant score in poor conditions to give the team much needed hope. Ollie Gough found some trouble on the front nine and couldn't produce a score to match his excellent first round. Fortunately, Josh Bryan and James Robinson significantly improved upon their morning scores and this was followed by Cameron Hoggarth’s 70 gross (-2) in which he finished in style by birdying the long ninth, his final hole. This was a tremendous effort by Cameron and gave him an individual top ten finish and Worcestershire’s best individual score.

Cameron Hoggarth ( Wharton Pk) finished in the top ten with a 2 under par second round.

Overall, it was a mixed scoreboard for Worcestershire, but the team rallied well in the afternoon and they all should be proud of their performances. They finished sixth, twelve shots behind the winners, Derbyshire.

Thank you to all the County Officials who attended and supported our players in some terrible weather. They were, Brian Peplow, Stuart Pritchard, Bill Thompson and Mark Ralphs.
