EGU Qualifier at Coxmoor GC 16.6.18 - Report
The men's County Six Team enjoyed their Friday afternoon practice round and were in good spirits whilst they watched the Spain v Portugal match in the Coxmoor club house.
Overnight rain made the high, wispy rough even tougher to negotiate as they began their 36 hole test of nerves with every score counting towards the final team total. Two of the par fives were reduced to par fours by moving the tees slightly forward and the pin positions, as always, were in some tricky spots. A strong wind, gusting up to 35 mph on occasions made everything even more challenging, although the down wind par four 8th, at 375yds, was often being driven. Coxmoor is a fine heathland course with fast, sloping greens and is often described as an inland links.
Adam Norman (pictured) lines up a tricky putt on the 17th.
As special mention must be made of Steven Lane (pictured) This is his 14th straight appearance in this event for the County and this outstanding achievement is currently unmatched by any other player in any County.
Our team of Adam Norman (Moseley GC, County Captain), Steven Lane (The Worcestershire), Kieron Austin ( Stourbridge GC), James Robinson ( Redditch GC), Matt Vigurs (Redditch GC) and Ben Woodward (Worcs G&CC) finished in a creditable 7th place overall as they improved on their first round scores by 12 shots.
Kieron Austin was our best performer with 148 (75 &73), which was in line with the standard scratch on the day but it was the Lincolnshire players who recorded some excellent scores in the low 70's and even a 67 during the difficult afternoon rounds.
The County would like to thank all our players for their excellent attitudes and commitment to representing the Union, especially Ben Woodward, who stepped in with a few days notice and acquitted himself extremely well. The County wish the Lincolnshire team every success at the National finals in September at Aldeburgh GC as the Midland representatives.
