Farrell does the double by winning the Boys' Match Play

WUGC U18 Boys Match Play Finals

at

Hagley Golf Club - Sunday 17th November 2013

The boys  semi - finals began at 8.00 a.m. on a very calm but overcast day at Hagley Golf Club. The Club Secretary had placed a poster on the noticeboard enticing members to come out and watch rather than play their own games. It was good to see that quite a few took up the opportunity to see some very fine golf.

In the first Semi-Final Oliver Farrell played some sublime golf against a very tough competitor in Oliver Gough. Although Oliver Gough was level par for 14 holes the five birdies from Oliver Farrell were unstoppable and he secured a 5 & 4 victory. In the second Semi-Final, Tom Godfrey played Roman Croft. Tom was in good form and slowly edged his way ahead against a very spirited challenge from Roman. Eventually, the holes ran out for Roman as Tom's play was just too consistent. Tom won 3&2 to reach the final.

The Final.   Tom Godfrey v Oliver Farrell

This was a unique moment when the two players met on the first tee. Less than 24 hrs earlier they had contested the Men's Match Play Final at Moseley. It's hard to know whether this has ever happened before whereby the finalists of both the Mens' and Boys' Match play events in the same year were contested by the same players. We are checking the record books.

Tom began the final in fine form. He confidently headed into a two up lead by the ninth, playing some very solid golf as Oliver struggled to find his semi-final form. He then moved to three up after the 10th and it would seem that Oliver's chances of winning both Championships were slipping away. However, as the gloom of a dark November afternoon descended, Oliver started to claw his way back into the match. A few errant tee shots from Tom and solid pars and a birdie from Oliver pulled the whole match to all square by the 16th. Tom produced the 'shot of the day' as his second to the 16th came over the trees and finished four feet away. Oliver responded well and finished 15 feet away. Oliver punched the air as he holed his putt but this was followed by Tom holing bravely from 4ft for a half. The 17th was halved in pars and on the 18th Tom, unfortunately, put his second shot into the water whilst Oliver played a fine 3 iron into the heart of the green to win by one hole.

The match was played in a great sporting manner and this full credit to both players as well as all the U18 competitors who took part. The County would like to especially thank Hagley Golf Club for hosting the previous rounds and the final. Nothing was too much trouble and the condition of the course was exemplary.
