Fulford Heath GC win Brandhall Gold Vase - 7th July 2017 - REPORT

(l-r) Chris White, Dave Parker, Steve Smith, Martin Cartwright & Mick Joiner (Fulford Heath GC Chairman) pictured with the Brandhall Gold Vase that they won on home soil on Friday 7th July 2017. 5th team member Roman Croft was unable to join his team mates because he had gone out to play in a knockout match after playing earlier in the day in the BHGV team!!

18 teams of 5 had arrived at Fulford Heath GC to compete in the Brandhall Gold Vase. The format is that all team members play a medal and the 4 best nett scores count towards the team total.

The course was in excellent condition and it was clear that the greens team had put in every effort to show the course at it's best. The players were full of praise for the course, and especially the firm and true greens.

Because of the format it is always difficult to see who is leading, as every team gets to drop their highest score when all 5 cards have been processed. However, because of 3 good early scores from Dave Parker (75), Roman Croft (71) and Martin Cartwright (70) the Fulford Heath team did seem to be the team to beat all day.

The Halesowen GC Team of James Green, Tony Phipps, Keith Thorne, Scott Attwood and Andy Houghton had a creditable 2nd equal with the Little Lakes GC Team of Andy Simmonds, John Morley, Garry Guest, Jordan Dorrell and Kevin Phillips on 301. They were closely followed by Stourbridge GC on 302 and Droitwich GC on 303.

However no-one was to catch the home team, and the victory was confirmed when their last man, Chris White, returned a best of the day nett 69, for which he won the EGU Salver, which is now being presented for the best individual nett score in the BHGV team event.

Grenville Rose (WUGC President) was joined by Mick Joiner (Fulford Heath GC Chairman) at the prize presentation. Mick thanked all the competitors for taking part and hoped that they had all enjoyed their day at Fulford Heath GC. On behalf of all the players, Grenville thanked Fulford Heath GC for hosting he event. He also thanked all the volunteers that had made the day such a huge success. These included the two ladies from Fulford Heath GC (Margaret & Mavis) who spent all day providing refreshments for the players on the 10th tee - something that was gratefully received by all the gentlemen in the very hot and humid conditions.

Other volunteers included the starters, Dave McDermott, Rex Harrison and Ken Palfrey; the referees, Tony Edwards, Colin Mitchell and John Whitehead; the scorers Jim Gray and Denis Hayes. Thanks were also given to all the staff at Fulford Heath GC who looked after everyone so well throughout the day.

Their success in winning the Brandhall Gold Vase, comes only a few days after Fulford Heath GC also won the Tomson-James Cup for A Team Club Team Winners in the County Championships. A great few days for Fulford Heath GC and also Roman Croft who was in both winning teams - a remarkable achievement. (At the time of writing this report we do not know if he also won his knockout match!!)
