January 2016 Coaching Report

JUNIOR COACHING REPORT JANUARY 2016

The inclement weather at the start of the year drastically affected our planned coaching sessions, but thanks to our brilliant team of coaches no time was lost, and much hard work was completed.

All weekend the lads from the U18s, U16s and U14s groups spent valuable time with Paul Darby. Paul not only spent time on the physical aspect of golf, but also spent part of his session on the mental side of the game. One of the key issues discussed was “not getting in front of yourself”, avoiding the “what ifs”, and sticking to a positive mental process.

Having sat in on one of these sessions, I spoke to many of the boys who said that they thought the session was important, and that they would indeed be working on the process.

On Saturday in very heavy rain Graham worked on “in trouble shots” and Ian worked in the bunker. Congratulations to them both, and to the boys, given that the conditions were nasty but everyone stuck to the task really well.

Sunday saw Worcester G&CC being closed, so another re jig of our coaching plan was needed. Once more Graham and Ian stepped up to the plate.

Graham held a very fine session on player profiling. He wanted to know what the boys’ aims were for this year, and how do we help get you there? The same thoughts were considered for 2020 and 2025. Most of the boys had career pathways planned but realised much work was needed. Thankfully all the boys were committed to their academic work, but to the county as well.

Ian worked in one of the squash courts, with the 'tracking kit and computer.' This helped the boys work on our main focal point being accuracy from 100 yards and in.

The boys were checked on 9, 7 and 5 iron striking, yardage checks, swing checks and ball dispersment. All of the lads were give some form of home work, whether it be more practice on distance control or having club loft checks carried out.

A very informative session. Thanks to the Squash members at Worcester G&CC for allowing us the use of a squash court.

Monday saw the U14 squad being able to go outside. They too worked with Paul Darby. Tom Warbrick worked in the bunker with the lads and Graham again took on shots out of trouble.

The lads hopefully won't get in trouble but should they, they will now have the knowledge to extricate themselves.

Again we should offer our thanks to the members of Worcester G&CC for allowing us to use their facilities. And I should like to thank our coaches and Paul Darby for Their dedicated and hard work in these trying conditions.
