Match Report / Result for Boys v PGA Match at Evesham on Thursday 24th April
Worcestershire Boys 2 1/2 v 9 1/2 Worcestershire PGA
Venue; Evesham Golf Club - Thursday 24th April 2014
Format; Foursomes in the morning and Singles in the afternoon. Both Match-play over 18 holes
This was the final friendly before the first league match of the season. The Boys Team has won this fixture for the last few seasons so the professionals were keen to record a win.
Following breakfast and team talks the teams headed out to warm up on an overcast morning although there was no wind, so it was ideal for golf.
The morning foursomes matches almost completely went to the professionals. William and Cameron managed to win half a point in the closely contested final game. However, two of the professional wins were not at all one sided affairs, as they were forced to win on eighteen with good pars. Jeremy Robinson and Adam Whiting showed some excellent team golf with two chip-ins and they were three under par at the turn. They won their game but had to play well to beat Ben and Cameron on the sixteenth as they made two or three good birdies and nearly an eagle on the closing holes.
The singles started a lot better for the Boys team as captain and home member, Oliver Farrell, beat Jeremy Robinson in the first match 4&3. Oliver was seven under par when the game finished - quite outstanding golf. Cameron Hoggarth also played well and beat 'stand in' professional Giles Blakeley 2&1. The other matches went to the professionals but Ben Finch, the youngest player, was unlucky to lose his close match after forcing Nathan Tomlinson up the eighteenth.
Overall, not the greatest result for the team, but valuable experience gained. Sometimes you learn more in defeat than in victory. Congratulations to the PGA team on a fine win although the Boys will be looking for victory next year.
I’d like to thank Evesham Golf Club for their hospitality and use of their well kept course which was in superb condition. Also, to the PGA Professionals for supporting the match and I hope they enjoyed it as much as the boys. It was also good to see the County Officials attending, namely, Mark Ralphs, Bill Thompson, Jim Gray and Stuart Pritchard.
