Match Report – Worcestershire Seniors v Gloucestershire

The match took place at Fulford Heath Golf Club on Monday 23rd September 2013. There was an added tension to the game as this fixture was our only defeat in 2012 and the Team was set for a real battle.

The course looked in excellent order and the groundstaff hand mowing the 18th raised expectations.

In the 9 hole greensomes Bill Thompson/Grenville Rose produced a classy performance and won their match by 2 holes. Peter Adams/Nigel Cowley reported a close match throughout but could not recover the one hole deficit. Charlie Smith/John Silvester again had a close game and won on the last hole. Both Ricky Chima/Terry Lawson and John Swann/Gordon Bailey reported sub par rounds and both matches won by a margin of three holes to two. Willie Kerr/Richard Coverdale could not hit form and finished losing by two and one.

With a lead of 4 to 2 after the morning session we all knew that we had to keep up the good play to secure a victory. The first of the afternoon four balls involving Bill Thompson/Nigel Cowley was a really well fought contest with birdie after birdie being recorded. Regrettably our pairing lost on the last hole. Peter Adams/Grenville Rose had to battle really hard to secure a halved match. Charlie Smith/Terry Lawson could not replicate their morning form and went down by 3 and 2. Ricky Chima/John Silvester were in a real battle and were one down on the 17th tee. They secured a win on the 17th and then managed a magnificent birdie down the last to win the match 1 up. John Swann/Willie Kerr had a tight start to their match but a series of birdies around the turn allowed them to secure a win by 3 and 2. The match was therefore all down to the last pairings although Gloucestershire needed a win to secure a halved match overall. Gordon Bailey/Richard Coverdale were all square on the 18th tee. Another magnificent birdie on the last hole secured a win for Worcestershire team and an overall result of 11 wins to 7.

The early course expectation truly became a reality as every player could not have been disappointed with the presentation of this golf course. Two of my opponents were so impressed that they took contact details with a view of having a day’s trip next year. This was also matched by the excellent standard of the catering and bar facility. My thanks go to Fulford Heath for allowing this match to take place and presenting the overall facility to such a high standard.

The season has now been completed and it is my duty to pass the reigns on to Grenville Rose at the County meeting on the 10th October 2013. I could not have imagined the level of support I have enjoyed over the last two years both from the players and The Executive and I am sure Grenville will enhance this further. This I feel is the reason that we, as a group, have produced some notable results. Over the last two years the Team has played 17 matches. We have achieved 12 wins, 4 losses and 1 drawn game.

My congratulations go to Bryan Swain who has finished top of the averages this season. Out of the 8 games he has played he has scored maximum points in 4 of his games and scored significant points in all other games played. Well done Bryan.
