National Finals at Robin Hood G.C. - Report and Pictures

Worcestershire Seniors – National County Finals Report
6th 7th and 8th Oct 2015 at Robin Hood Golf Club, Solihull

The Worcestershire Senior team qualified for the National Finals in August by winning the Midland Regional qualifier by 7 shots. Finally, the moment had arrived and after a few visits to Robin Hood G.C. in preparation it was time to take on the might of Yorkshire’s, BB&O’s and Devon’s best senior players.

The 2015 Worcestershire Senior Team

Back Row L-R : Peter Adams (Redditch GC)  Steve Carpenter (Stourbridge GC) , Bryan Swain (Stourbridge GC) , Phil White (Fulford Heath GC)

Front Row L-R : Martin Cartwright (Fulford Heath GC), Will Painter ( Kidderminster GC &County President), Grenville Rose ( Worcs G&CC & Captain), Bill Thompson, (Kings Norton GC) Paul Newman (Droitwich GC)

With greens running at 13.9 and the course playing its full length after some heavy rain, some of the best senior golfers in the country, many full internationals, battled against each other in foursomes and singles for 36 holes each day to try and win this prestigious national event.

After a tough opening match against Yorkshire, the Worcestershire seniors acquitted themselves superbly with some great individual singles wins against BB&O (the eventual winners) and on the final day, against Devon Golf Union. Putting on such incredibly fast and tricky greens was a real trial of physical and mental strength whilst the large number of supporters from every team added additional levels of expectation and pressure.

Nevertheless, the Worcestershire players responded magnificently and the team spirit they’d developed throughout the week was evident as they immediately returned to the course to support their fellow players once their matches had finished. There was also a host of other Worcestershire seniors and many supporters from our clubs who attended and caddied for the players, which again showed high levels of interest and popular support for our players.

The team were extremely proud to have represented the County and would like to thank the County Executive for their tremendous support before and during the event. Nothing was too much trouble and our players were fully prepared and ready to meet the challenges presented to them. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the supporters and caddies who gave up their time to give our players every chance of success.

We’ve learned a great deal from this experience as well as thoroughly enjoying the event. The expectations of what Worcestershire Seniors can achieve in the future have been given a huge boost.
