It is with deep regret that we have to announce that Brandhall Golf Club, Oldbury, has been now been closed. This comes after its conception in 1903 and inauguration into the R&A in 1905 with the loss of 117 years of history.
The club members and trustees fought extremely hard to save the club through legal representations, petitions and consultations but at a Sandwell MBC Cabinet Meeting on Wednesday 27 May 2020, the Cabinet Members voted unanimously to close Brandhall Golf Course and the Clubhouse.
Councillor Marie Crompton, cabinet member for active communities, moving the recommendation to close the golf course told Sandwell’s cabinet: “We have not made this decision lightly. We need more accessible – by all – green space and a new school to replace Causeway Green which has been in need of replacement for a very, very long time.”
Sandwell MBC says it spends £275,000 a year subsidising the course while there is an over supply of golf facilities in the borough. The closure will have go to all councillors to be ratified but due to the Covid-19 pandemic no full council meetings have been scheduled for the remainder of this year.
