Seniors open league account with an away win

Worcestershire County Seniors arrived at Breadsall Priory GC in Derbyshire for the 1st league match of the year, hoping to repeat last year's victory.

The morning foursomes was a tight affair, with Worcestershire taking a narrow 1 point lead (2.5 - 3.5) into lunch, against a strong Derbyshire Team. Thus we knew that the afternoon fourballs were going to be challenging, with the Derbyshire Senior Captain rallying his players to fight for every point. However the Worcstershire players stood firm  to complete an afternoon result of 5 - 7 in our favour, meaning we ran out 7.5 - 10.5 winners on the day. The match was played in an excellent spirit. 

I should like to give special thanks to Tony Sanders & 1st match player, Phil Shurmer, for winning both morning and afternoon. Also, congratulations to Gary Bristow & partner Mark Carpenter for fighting back from 3 down late in their match to gain a halve, which helped change the course of the game.

Finally, special congratulations to Duncan Macpherson (County 2nd Team Captain) & Phil Shurmer for representing the County Seniors for the 1st time. They were presented with their County Ties after the match.

The Worcestershire players found Breadsall Priory GC to be an excellent venue, with top quality service from all the staff.

I would like to thank my players for  a good away win, and remind them that we play Warwickshire next week at Worcester G&CC on Friday 12th July, which should be another tough test.
