Seniors win again against S&H

Both teams and visiting officials surround the final green to watch the conclusion to a fine match against Shropshire & Herefordshire at Bridgnorth GC.

Match Report by Bill Thompson : S&H V Worcestershire Seniors 20.7.21

On one of the hottest days of the year both teams prepared well with plenty of water, caps and sun cream to cope with the oppressive conditions.

Bridgnorth was in excellent condition considering only two greens staff were able to work due to others having to isolate after being contact traced. This was also the case with the shorthanded bar staff and much thanks must go to Philip Kay (Club Sec), Katie and Lisa, who, between them, served drinks and meals all day to a host of members, visitors and our two teams. Their tireless efforts throughout such a long day are to be commended.

The foursomes matches were keenly fought as the cool of the morning gave way to seering heat by midday. At lunch it was a tight match at  3-3, the biggest winners being Jim Leydon and Ian Smith with a resounding 5&3 over the nine holes.

Despite the heat, the four ball matches were all played to a very high quality. Hill and Thornhill, with 5 birdies just couldn't keep pace with the 8 birdies from McGarry and Cheese. This was the same for Henn and Taylor, meeting the strong pair of Chesters and Magill, who were well under par. Thompson and Green combined well to go dormie four up but with two birdies from team Captain, John Williams, it took a birdie from Steve Green on the 17th to make sure of the victory. The strong club pairing of Marshall and Shurmer were always in control and they were excellent 4&3 winners and unbeaten on the day. Fine golf from the start meant that Desmond and Carpenter were one up with one to play and they looked to be home and dry until Duncan Hamling holed a great putt on the tricky 18th in front of the two teams looking on, to halve their match. Fortunately, in the last match, the irrepressible pair of Ian Smith (who birdied the 17th to win their match) and Jim Leydon won 2&1 to secure a fine victory for Worcestershire. The Worcestershire Seniors are now holding first place in the WM League after three wins. This is a great effort by all the lads who've played for the team this season so far.

The cameraderie between both teams is much enjoyed and these views were warmly expressed by both captains in their closing remarks. The skeleton staff at Bridgnorth GC are to be highly praised for their marvellous efforts throughout the day and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. We look forward to welcoming the S&H team to a course in Worcestershire next year.
