Warwickshire v Worcestershire U18s MGU League Match

25.7.21 at Stonebridge GC 

Stonebridge GC is a fine test of golf. It's not a long course but it demands precision from the tee and careful shot execution with every approach to the undulating greens. The Blythe / Somers course was in excellent condition and although cloudy, there was light breeze making it a fine day for scoring. 

Knowing the course probably helped the Warwickshire lads but it was also their good play that gave them the edge over the crucial last few holes to take a very strong 4-1 lead after the morning foursomes. Under par golf from Louie Stott and James Ilsley was our main highlight in the foursomes and they ran out as comfortable 4&3 winners. Three other matches were very hard fought and reached the last hole but went Warwickshire's way.

The singles required a big comeback from the Worcestershire lads. James Ilsley and Louie Stott continued with their very good morning form and won their matches convincingly. Phillip Krone, the Midland U16 Champion, was always ahead and secured a fine 3&2 win. Sam Rowbottom, kept his driver in the bag, kept it in play and battled magnificently to a 3&1 win. Unfortunately, despite everyone's great efforts, it just wasn't enough to turn around the foursomes results and it was Warwickshire, who ran out solid 10-5 winners.

Both Captains, in their closing remarks, thanked Stonebridge GC for looking after everyone so well and for the course preparation, which was first class. They also thanked the Junior Organisers for giving up their time to support their County Junior teams. The Worcestershire U18's will have to keep working hard on their skills and prepare again for their final league game of the season on Monday 16th August at Droitwich GC v Staffordshire.
