Tough and challenging conditions welcomed our U16’s for their final fixture of the season at The Leicestershire Golf Club on Sunday.

The 130 year old, championship course was a fitting test to host this years MGU County Cup. However the driving wind and rain was to prove the biggest adversary on the day, making sure any low score would be very difficult to come by.

Tom Blizzard was first out for our recently crowned league winning team and his start looked to be an even match for the weather. After the first five holes Tom was at +1 but a couple of unfortunate breaks cut short his chances of carding the score he would have wished for.

Our second out was Phil Krone who’s determination was evident from the start. His perfectly struck drive on the first was followed by an equally impressive 7 iron into the tough first green, leaving the perfect, uphill 5 foot putt. Phil made his putt with ease and this confidence with his putter proved vital in his round. Through the turn he was a very impressive 3 under with birdies also on holes 3, 7 and 8 and although his putting did dry up on the back his round of 68 was to be the best gross score of the competition By an unbelievable four shots.

James Humphries and James Ilsley were to follow and both looked assured through 9 holes, at just +3 and level respectively. James Humphries took apart the many dog legs with his big hitting iron play going further and more accurately then his playing partners woods. Ever consistent James Ilsley also looked at home on this course finding fairways and greens in regulation easy to come by. The greens however were a different test as most of the field found out.

Admirably Cassius Blake moved up the order at the last minute without question due to traffic issues. His no problem, get on with it, attitude along with some great golf was greatly rewarded going through the turn 1 over. With his driver as long and as accurate as any on tour, Cassius was in total control all day and his final net score of 68 was to prove the lowest of the day.

Our anchorman, Tom Lennon was equally impressive tee to green. Never in trouble, Toms worst hole was to be a bogey but, like those before him, the tricky greens proved to be the difference between a good round and a great round.

With 5 of the 6 best scores counting, we were never outside the top three throughout the day. With only a few groups left out, the winners had already been decided with us in second place. Unfortunately top two was not to be as we came third on countback but the effort our team put in was incredible and they should all be very proud.

A special thank you to Roger Martin, Stuart Pritchard and Debbie Pritchard for all of your amazing help and support on the day.

Finally I’d like to congratulate the whole of the U16 squad this year. It’s been a fantastic team effort from all of you, even those that haven’t played as much as you’d have wanted, you all push each other and that’s what makes a winning team.

Have a great winter, practice hard and hopefully we can defend our title in 2022.

Regards.

Mark Hewlett

U16 & U18 Team Manager
