It was a great day at Worcester Golf & Country Club for our County Senior Team against a very strong Warwickshire side lead by their captain Mark Reynolds.
From the outset I could see that all our players were relaxed and ready for the morning foursomes. Everyone enjoyed the professional style of the team and individual player announcements from Mr Alec Mackie, who acted as the starter for the day. Thank you Alec for your continued support.
The Worcestershire lads combined well in their pairs and took a very commanding lead at lunch, leading by 4 1/2 to 1 1/2.  Most notable was the the performance of the home pair, Mark Carpenter and Tony Sanders, who achieved a convincing 5&4 win over the nine holes.

All twelve Warwickshire players were determined to make up the difference in the afternoon 4BBB matches. After nine holes they were leading in most of them but this very successful Worcestershire Senior team made me very proud by the way they play for each other in the right spirit to win their matches.
Special congratulations must go to to Gary Bristow and Craig Pates for getting maximum points am / pm. In addition, it was also a great win for Bill Thompson and Steve Green against their strongest pair of Tony Allen and Nev Gardner by 1 hole, in what turned out to be a cliff hanger of a match.
I must mention my playing partner Shaun Thornhill, who dug deep to produce a number of fine shots on the closing holes to help us recover from 5 down with 6 to play in order to halve the match on the 18th against Martin Fell and Peter Holt. Such was the level of competition in all of the matches that four out of six of them went to the 18th hole. I'd like to pay credit to the Warwickshire Team for such a spirited attempt to come back against us to gain a victory. There's always an extra sense of local rivalry when we play Warwickshire but the matches are rightly played with the highest level of sportsmanship and good friendship - long may this continue.

After dinner both Captain’s thanked Worcester Golf & Country Club for hosting this event. I'd like to thank all their greens staff for working so hard during the week to prepare the course to such a good standard for the match, all of which enabled us to enjoy this intense match to the full. The hospitality and quality of the catering services were exceptional.
Many thanks to Alec (starter) and to all our supporters on the day - Tony Edwards, Pete Craddock, Pete Adams ,2nd Team Captain Duncan Macpherson and Andy Baker.
It was much appreciated by myself that our past Seniors Captain Pete Adams, and the Warwickshire President, Mr Graham Barton, could join Mark and myself on the top table for dinner.

Finally, once again, I'd like to thank all my players for playing with such determination and commitment to pull off such a superb win against a strong Warwickshire team.
Well done everyone.  I look forward to seeing you all again at Kidderminster GC on Thursday 25th July against S&H.

Paul Newman
