Report on the Season Opener for Seniors at Worcester G&CC

Seniors 'get together' at Worcester Golf and Country Club 14th March 2014

Report

28 Seniors gathered at Worcester Golf and Country Club on a foggy morning to meet the new Captain, Grenville Rose and enjoy an early season game of competitive golf. There were a number of new Seniors making their first appearances as well as the 'old hands', who quickly demonstrated a host of flexibility exercises and warm up routines to the new boys. After watching this painful exhibition of suppleness, packets of max strength ibruprofen tablets were taken and teams were formed up to play a 'bowmaker'. ( two scores to count).

By midday, the sun was out, it was shirt sleeves and the players were enjoying a course in magnificent condition, particularly the greens, which were extremely fast and true. The greens staff deserve high praise for their efforts in being able to present the course in such superb condition, particularly after such a wet winter period.

Nearest the pin prizes were won by Roger Martin ( new Senior) and Les Stallard. The overall winners with 77 points were: Pete Adams, Les Stallard, Mike O'Donnell and Phil White. In 2nd place with 73 pts were: Ian Dorrell, Roger Martin, Bryan Swain and Bill Thompson. There were some fine individual performances, particularly by the new Captain, Grenville, who is looking forward to another successful season with the County Seniors.  It seems that the interest in playing County Senior golf is growing steadily every year.

An excellent two course meal was followed by the prize presentation and Grenville's thoughts on the new season ahead. This year, the Seniors will be playing in a league format for the first time against the other Midland Counties. A new experience for everyone but one which the County are keen to do well in.

The County would like to thank everyone at Worcester G&CC for their kind hospitality and for the magnificent course presentation.

The next fixture for the Seniors is on Monday 14th April against the County U14 Boys at Moseley G.C. The first league game will be against Leicestershire on Wednesday 23rd April at Kings Norton G.C.
