Wednesday 21st June 2017 will probably go down in the records as one of the hottest June days in living memory. It meant that the 2017 Senior County Championship at Droitwich GC would be played under very trying conditions.
Despite a long run of scorching days, the Droitwich course was in superb condition. Approach shots to many greens had to be carefully calculated, with links style run up shots often providing the best results. The greens themselves were smooth and true.
Many players were heard to say that they would have posted a better score "if only...." and often the tricky back 9 at Droitwich GC took it's toll. There were many good scores on the day, with Martin Cartwright (Fulford Heath GC), Darron Henn (Gaudet Luce GC) and Bill Thompson (Kings Norton GC) all posting 74 gross. However, The Nevill Caroll Salver for best gross was won by Steve Green from Rose Hill GC with an exceptional 72.

The results of the Nett competition would prove to be a lot closer. There were 4 scores of 71, Steve Green had a nett 70, and there were two 69s from Darron Henn (Gaudet Luce GC) and Martin Cartwright (Fulford Heath GC). However, the top prize would be decided on count back, with David Hunt (Bransford GC) and Kelvin Price (Droitwich GC) both scoring 67 nett. Scores over the back 9 and back 6 were also tied, but David Hunt won out on the back 3.

In his presentation speech Grenville was keen to thank Droitwich GC for hosting the event, and providing a course in such excellent condition. He also thanked the green staff, catering staff and bar staff.
Grenville also pointed out the excellent unpaid work put in by the many volunteers who ensured the event ran smoothly: Dave McDermott was the starter and also helped on the scorers desk; Brenda Binnie, John Whitehead and Tony Edwards (all Droitwich GC members) were the 3 referees for the day; Jim Gray (also Droitwich GC) and Debbie Pritchard also manned the scorers desk with Dave McDermott.
Steve Green will be invited to represent Worcestershire at the England Golf Champion of Champions event at Woodhall Spa GC on Saturday & Sunday 16th & 17th September 2017.
In addition, the top 8 players (Steve Green to Will Painter) have won an automatic place in the Worcestershire Seniors Matchplay finals at Bransford GC on Tuesday 22nd & Wednesday 23rd August 2017.
